In a display of reverence and education, American Legion Palisades Post 283's "Evening of Honor" held on Nov. 18, brought together more than 250 people, with a special focus on the younger generation. The event, which ran from 4-10 p.m., was dedicated to recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of five of our nation's Medal of Honor recipients.

The event highlighted the heroic actions of MOH recipients Lt. Col. William D. Swenson, Staff Sgt. Ryan Pitts, Master Sgt. Leroy Petry, Specialist 5 James C. McCloughan, Col. (Ret.) Jack Jacobs. Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) Gary L. Littrell was unable to attend.

The evening kicked off with an engaging panel discussion led by Bob Jerome from the nonprofit Heroes Linked. It was a unique opportunity for the attendees, especially the two dozen children seated at the front, to listen firsthand to the experiences and stories of these distinguished heroes. The Medal of Honor recipients answered Jerome’s questions in a manner that was both succinct and impactful, creating an atmosphere of deep respect and contemplation.

Following the panel discussion, the event took on a more interactive tone. Children and their parents had the invaluable opportunity to engage directly with the Medal of Honor recipients. This segment was not just about asking questions but also about connecting on a personal level, as families chatted with the recipients and captured these memorable moments in photographs.

"Hosting an event with such distinguished Medal of Honor recipients was not only an honor but a profound reminder of the bravery and sacrifice these heroes have shown,” said Jim Cragg, commander of American Legion Palisades Post 283. “Seeing the interaction between the youngest generation and these living legends, who represent the best of American valor and spirit, was incredibly moving. It's moments like these that bridge history with the future, inspiring us all to remember and carry forward the values of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism."

The latter part of the evening transitioned to cater to an adult audience. It began with a cocktail networking hour, creating a more relaxed and sociable atmosphere. This was followed by another hour-long panel discussion, allowing for a deeper dive into the experiences and insights of the Medal of Honor recipients. The event concluded with an additional networking session, offering guests a chance to mingle, reflect on the discussions of the evening, and further their connections with one another and with the honored guests.

The Evening of Honor at Palisades Post 283 not only paid tribute to the valor of American military heroes but also served as a poignant reminder of the enduring values they represent. The event stood out as a bridge between generations, imparting lessons of heroism and patriotism to all who attended.
